Description

Later 18th century. Circular-plan folly. Randomly arranged unhewn stones with polished sandstone ashlar base course. Round-arched doorway to N. Roofless (1998).

Statement of Interest

B Group with Dalhousie Castle, Folly on W Bank of River South Esk, Dalhousie Bridge over River South Esk, West Lodge and Grove Farm (former Dalhousie Walled Garden). Built on or near the site of the demolished Mansion of Cockpen owned originally by Mr Baron Cockburn, then by the Earl of Dalhousie. The folly is similar to the folly on W Bank of River South Esk in the Dalhousie Castle Policies. Described as a "ruin" on the 1st edition OS map, and also as a pump house the purpose of this tower is unclear. It seems most likely that it was simply a folly forming part of the picturesque landscape. A Fraser suggests that some of the stonework may be what remains of an old dovecot.
