Description

Small, farm labourer's cottage in which the poet Hugh
MacDiarmid (C M Grieve) lived from 1951 until his death
in 1978. Cottage built probably in 2nd quarter of 19th
century; single storey; 3 bays; big porch at front,
kitchen at rear, both modern, and harled - cottage is
rubble-built with ashlar dressings; sashes with 4-pane
glazing pattern; end stacks; slate roof.

Statement of Interest

MacDiarmid (1892-1978) was the central figure in the

Scottish literary "renaissance", and is rated by some as

Scotland's greatest poet since Burns. Inscribed slab at

doorstep of MacDiarmid's "The little white Rose" ("The

rose of all the world is not for me/I want for my part

/Only the little white rose of Scotland/That smells sharp

and sweet and breaks the heart")
