Description

Circa 1800. 2-storey and dormerless attic symmetrical
3-bay house joined to flanking single storey wings at right
angles forming overall H-plan. Later single storey 8-bay
wing projects at rear.
Main block squared coursed tooled grey granite, pinned
granite wings, harl-pointed rubble rear and flanks, tooled
granite dressings.
Centre entrance masked by modern glazed sun porch with
local slate roof. Double leaf panelled door with incised
reeded detailing to lower halves; decorative glazing to
oblong fanlight. Flanking wings each contain pair 3-bay
dwellings, each with centre door. Mainly 12-pane glazing,
4-pane to rear and wings. End and ridge stacks; local
slate roofs.
Interior; slender turned balusters to staircase, with
square panelled end newels with ball finials. Panelled
doors and window shutters with front door incised detailing
repeated in 1st floor drawing room woodwork. Decorative
plaster cornice and ceiling in drawing room incorporating
anthemion, features and intertwining floral motifs.

Statement of Interest

Home of William Forsyth, author of IN THE SHADOW OF CAIRNGORM

(1899) and other works. Similar good quality house carpentry

and plaster work at Birchfield, also Nethy Bridge.
