Early 19th century. Single storey and dormerless attic,
3-bay cottage with continuous slightly lower single
storey and loft, 5-bay steading range set back at gable
forming linear plan. White-washed rubble, the rubble used
for the steading being of rougher quality masonry; upper
half of the steading gable of vertical weather-boarding.
COTTAGE: centre entrance masked by later gabled porch with
side entrance; small windows with 4-pane glazing. End
stacks; red-painted corrugated iron roof with roof lights.
STEADING: irregular bays with 3 doors and 2 small windows;
1 lighting former stable; loft door in end gable;
corrugated iron roof (also painted red) with roof lights.
Linear plan similar to other croft house/steadings on the
E coast of Sutherland.
Land around Spinningdale improved and village established
by George Dempster of Dunnichen who built the (now
ruinous) spinning mill there in the 1790s. Early cottages
in the area said (1793) to have been mean; most would
have been re-built once the land was improved and
productive.
Corrugated-iron roof would have replaced the former thatch
(probably heather over turf).
