A war memorial of 1919 by Messrs Beattie & Co.

MATERIALS: constructed of granite.

DESCRIPTION: comprising an obelisk on a square plinth and base with a sheathed sword and belt carved in relief to the front face of the shaft and inscribed: IN/ HONOUR/ OF/ THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-18/ (Names).

History


The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Knowe Presbyterian Church (latterly the United Reformed Church) by Messrs Beattie & Co and was unveiled on 28 December 1919 with Mrs Thomas Armstrong in attendance.
