A First World War memorial located in the churchyard to All Saints Church, Granby.
MATERIALS: White limestone
DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands in the churchyard of All Saints Church, and is located to the north-west of the tower. The memorial takes the form of an incised wheel cross at the head of a tapered, chamfered shaft. The shaft is set upon a two-stepped base which stands upon a deep, square plinth with a quadrant moulding at the junction with the stepped base.
The west face of the plinth carries a metal plaque with the dedication TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOURED/ MEMORY OF THOSE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918 / NAMES / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS /THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS / ST JOHN XV v 13. There is also a commemorative plaque in the church which records the names of those who fell in the First World War and those who served in the Second World War.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Granby in Nottinghamshire as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial is located in the churchyard of All Saints Church (listed at Grade I, List entry 1265230). It commemorates 10 local servicemen who fell during the First World War.
