A First World War memorial, unveiled in 1922.

DESCRIPTION: Woodsetton War Memorial is located on Sedgely Road, close to the junction with Parkes Hall Road.
It consists of a wheel-headed cross on a collared shaft. The cross shaft surmounts a pedestal, square on plan, with chamfered corners. This is set on a three-stepped base which is surrounded by a low wall with finials at the corners.
The north face of the memorial bears an inscription which reads ERECTED/ BY/ PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE/ KILLED AND IN HONOUR/ OF THE MEN WHO WENT/ FROM WOODSETTON TO/ FIGHT IN THE GREAT/ EUROPEAN WAR 1914 – 1918. The east face of the memorial reads KILLED IN ACTION/ OR DIED OF WOUNDS/ SWAN VILLAGE/ (NAMES), while the west face reads KILLED IN ACTION/ OR DIED OF WOUNDS/ WOODSETTON/ (NAMES)/ PARKES HALL/ (NAMES).

History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at Woodsetton as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by 30 members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.
Woodsetton War Memorial was unveiled in 1922, and originally stood in front of Mount Tabor Methodist Chapel on Sedgely Road. The chapel became redundant in 2001 and the memorial was relocated to its present site in 2015.
