A First World War memorial cross with later Second World War additions.
A First World War memorial cross with later Second World War additions.
MATERIALS: constructed of granite.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial sits on a concrete base within a wider tarmac area surrounded by later railings outside the memorial hall and it comprises a roughhewn Latin cross with an incised cross at the centre of the head and running down the shaft. The shaft rises from a two stepped granite plinth. There is a smoothed panel at the base of the shaft which carries the first of the names.
INSCRIPTION: the top section of the plinth reads: IN HONOURED AND GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914 – 1918/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS”. On the second section of the plinth are the names of the fallen from Second World War preceded by 1939 – 1945.
The metal railings surrounding the memorial, installed in 2006, are excluded from the listing.
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Dobwalls as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community, who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. It commemorates 10 local servicemen who died during the First World War. Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the eight fallen of that conflict. The memorial previously stood on the A38 but was moved due to concerns about safety.
In 2006 railings were placed around the memorial to provide additional protection with the help of grant aid from War Memorials Trust.
Dobwalls War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Architectural interest:
* As a well-realised war memorial in Cornish granite, which takes the simple form of a Latin cross.
Historic interest:
* As an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20.
