Description

Short rectangular pillar of white stone. The front face bears an attached stone plaque reading: IN MEMORY / OF / OUR COMRADES / WHO DIED IN WAR. The right face also bears a stone plaque, reading: THE FLAGSTAFF / OF THE / DULWICH VOLUNTEER / BATTALION / 1914 - 1919. The pillar rests on a two-step base.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at the Church of St Peter in Dulwich as a permanent testament to the sacrifices made by the members of the local community. It was designed by the engineer officer to the Dulwich Volunteer Battalion Lieut Geo Sutton and erected aroound 1919-1920. It was restored twice in the 2000s, however the flagpole was removed at some point in 2016-2017.

Reasons for Listing

Dulwich (St Peter's) War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices it made in the First World War;
* Architectural interest: as a simple yet dignified pillar war memorial;
* Group value: with the Grade II-listed St Peter's Church and the Grade II-listed parish hall.
