DESCRIPTION
The memorial, which stands circa 4.5m high, takes the form of a cross of sacrifice, the cross and octagonal shaft with a relief carved inverted sword, on a moulded foot. The foot stands on an octagonal plinth, which is set on a platform of three narrow stone steps. The plinth is inscribed on three sides, in a Serif font. The front face reads ERECTED / BY THE / VILLAGERS OF WOOLVERTON / TO THE SACRED MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND / FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918. The right face is inscribed with the details of the soldier from the village who died in the war: WALTER HAINE / 11TH. BN. K.R.R.C. / FRANCE / 1916. The left face carries the inscription THESE MEN OF OURS / UNSELFISH, UNAFRAID / WENT TO THE WORLDWIDE FIGHT / FORGET NOT HOW THEY FOUGHT / AND HOW WE PRAYED / FOR ENGLAND AND FOR RIGHT / HENRY NEWBOLT.

The memorial was erected after the First World War, as part of the great wave of commemoration of the sacrifice made by the Fallen from communities across the country. It was set up in a prominent position on the main road through the village, on land given by Mr RHP Batten-Pooll of Rode Manor. The memorial was unveiled on 4 October 1926 by Capt Arthur Batten-Pooll VC, MC, and dedicated by the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The memorial commemorates the 21 men of the village who fought in the First World War, including Walter Haine, who died in France in 1916.
The First World War memorial at Woolverton is listed at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design interest: a well-executed stone memorial, with good inscriptions.
