Description

The memorial stands c40m to the west of the Church of Our Blessed Lady Immaculate (Grade II-listed), facing east. It takes the form of a tall crucifix. The cross and hood are in oak; the figure of Christ crucified is painted white. The cross rises from a coursed stone plinth, square on plan and with a low pyramidal top. A small black plaque to the front face of the plinth bears the dedication prayer from the Mass for the dead, in Latin followed by English, reading: PIE JESU DOMINE/ DONA EIS/ REQUIEM SEMPITERNAM/ MERCIFUL LORD JESUS/ GRANT THEM/ ETERNAL REST.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised in the cemetery of the Church of our Blessed Lady Immaculate, Washington, as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.

Reasons for Listing

The war memorial which stands to the west of the Church of Our Blessed Lady Immaculate, Washington is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifices it has made in the First World War;
* Architectural interest: a tall and imposing Calvary cross;
* Group value: with the Church Of Our Blessed Lady Immaculate and Presbytery adjoining (Grade II-listed).
