First World War memorial unveiled on 31 October 1921 with later additions for the Second World War.
MATERIALS: Aberdeen granite.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial is located in the Church of St Michael’s Cemetery Extension in Burgh By Sands. It comprises a wheel-head cross surmounting a rectangular tapered shaft. The shaft is set upon a two-tiered tapered plinth and a single-stepped base.
The front face of the upper tier of the plinth is inscribed IN / MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918. Below on the lower tier is THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR FREEDOM AND FOR HONOUR / THEIR EXAMPLE WILL BE / AN ABIDING INSPIRATION. The other faces are inscribed with the names of the fallen. On the back is the later inscription IN MEMORY OF THE ABOVE / WHO FELL IN WORLD WAR II / 1939 – 1945.

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Burgh By Sands as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by 16 members of the local community who fell during the First World War.
The memorial was erected by public subscription, costing £63 19s 6d, and the builders were Messrs Beattie and Co. It was unveiled on 31 October 1921.
Following the Second World War, an inscription dedicated to those who lost their lives in that conflict was added.
Burgh By Sands War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: an elegant and striking Aberdeen granite wheel-head cross.
* Group value: with Burgh By Sands Roman Fort and Hadrian’s Wall (scheduled monument), the Old Vicarage (Grade II) and the Church of St Michael (Grade I).
