History

The war memorial in Creech St Michael was unveiled on 1 January 1922, as part of the great wave of commemoration of the sacrifice made by the fallen from communities across the country. It was originally set up on Sycamore Walk but was then relocated to south-east, within the churchyard of St Michael’s Church (Grade I). It commemorates the men of the parish who lost their lives during the First World War. A further inscription to the Fallen from the Second World War was later added.

Reasons for Listing

Creech St Michael War Memorial of 1922 is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Design interest: for its simple but well-proportioned design;
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Church of St Michael which is listed at Grade I and a number of Grade II listed chest tombs.
