First World War memorial, erected in 1921.

MATERIALS: carved from granite.

DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is prominently situated on the summit of St Michael’s Hill and takes the form of a Celtic-style wheel cross and a tall shaft on a rectangular plinth, which in turn rests on a square three-stepped base. The front (east) face of the plinth is inscribed in black painted lettering: IN/ EVERLASTING/ MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ MINEHEAD/ WHO LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918. The names of the fallen are recorded on the north, west and east faces. A stone bench was added to the south side of the base after the Second World War; its back is inscribed with the names of the Fallen.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was erected in Minehead at the junction between St Michael's Road and Martlett Road in 1921 to commemorate the 106 local men who lost their lives during the war. It was designed by Taunton architects F W Roberts and Willman and was unveiled on Armistice Day. A stone bench was added after the Second World War in memory of the 54 men who died during this conflict.

Reasons for Listing

Minehead War Memorial, which was erected in 1921, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Historic Interest: as a poignant reminder of the tragic impact of world events upon an individual community, commemorating the men from this parish who lost their lives fighting in the First and Second World Wars;
* Design: a well-executed memorial in the form of a Celtic cross.
