A First World War memorial, erected circa 1920, altered after the Second World.

DESCRIPTION
The war memorial takes the form of a coped calvary on a tapering, octagonal shaft, set on a square plinth, all on an octagonal platform of two steps. The base is inscribed, to the front face: IN / HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / LEST WE FORGET / JESU MERCY / PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF / (NAMES) / MDCCCXIV MDCCCXIX. The right face is inscribed: ALSO / IN HONOURED MEMORY OF / (NAMES) / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945 / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

History


The war memorial in Stogursey was constructed circa 1920-4, to commemorate the 24 Fallen of the village. After the Second World War, the names of the two men who had died were added to the inscriptions.

Reasons for Listing


The war memorial in Stogursey is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a sombre but elegant memorial, well made and with good inscriptions;
* Group value: with the listed buildings which it stands opposite, on the north side of the High Street.
