First World War memorial, 1920, with later additions for the Second World War.

Description

The memorial stands in the churchyard of the church of All Hallows (Grade II). It is made of granite and consists of a Maltese cross decorated with a Celtic pattern and a small wreath in the centre carved in bas-relief, set on a flat tapering column that rises from a square base.

An inscription on the front face of the base reads IN MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN”. The names of the men who fell in the First World War are listed on the front face of the column. On another face on the base reads 1939-1945 (NAMES). The inscriptions are raised in relief, and painted black.

History

The memorial was designed by the masons Rogerson of Carlisle, and unveiled and dedicated on the 30 May 1920. In 2014, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £257 towards the restoration of the lettering. The inscriptions had lost legibility so these were re-painted using black enamel paint.

Reasons for Listing

Mealsgate War Memorial, which stands in the churchyard of the church of All Hallows, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a formalised Celtic cross;
* Group value: with the Grade II listed church of All Hallows.
