The war memorial was constructed some time after 1919, to commemorate the men of the parish of High Ham who fell during the First World War of 1914-1918. The memorial stands in the churchyard of the church of St Andrew, listed at Grade I, immediately to the east of the south porch of the church.
The war memorial at High Ham is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: taking the form of a churchyard cross, with detailed carving, the memorial makes a harmonious addition to the churchyard in which it is set;
* Group value: with the church of St Andrew, listed at Grade I, the churchyard walls, and three listed monuments standing within the churchyard, as well as with a number of other listed buildings nearby.
