Description

Standing at the end of a tree-lined approach, the tall granite memorial comprises a ringed, ornate cross on a tapering octagonal shaft, raised on a four-step base. The texts comprise metal lettering set into the faces of the steps. The First World War inscription is recorded on the uppermost two steps: ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF STOKE GOLDING/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS,/ LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT/ THAT THEIR NAME BE NOT FORGOTTEN

The 21 names of those lost in the First World War are on the third step. A Second World War inscription was added to the bottom step: SECOND GREAT WAR/ 1939-1945/ LEST WE FORGET with a further 12 names. The memorial stands in the rond point of the central path of the cemetery.

History

The war memorial, erected by parishioners in remembrance of men lost in the First World War, was originally sited at the Bull Ring in Stoke Golding. It was unveiled by Private Joseph Skelton on 25 September 1921. The memorial was relocated to the Hinckley Road cemetery after the Second World War.

Reasons for Listing

Stoke Golding War Memorial, which stands in Hinckley Road Cemetery, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Setting: the memorial forms the focus of the Hinckley Road cemetery.
