A First World War memorial dedicated to the men from Ilchester parish who lost their lives whilst serving their country in the First World War and subsequently the Second World War.

Description


A First World War memorial dedicated to the men from Ilchester parish who lost their lives whilst serving their country in the First World War and subsequently the Second World War.

The monument consists of a Portland stone Celtic cross set on a round pillar on a square Hamstone plinth bearing marble tablets with leaded lettering giving the names of the sixteen Fallen and the words:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE / OF OUR MEN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN DEFENCE / OF THEIR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / OF 1914-1918

A further marble tablet was added at the base of the monument inscribed with the names of the five men of the parish who lost their lives whilst serving their country in the Second World War.

History


A war memorial erected in the churchyard of St Mary Major in Ilchester, dedicated to sixteen men in the parish who lost their lives whilst serving their country in the First World War, and subsequently also to the five men who lost their lives in the Second World War.

Ilchester War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple cross design, well-crafted and using an interesting mix of Portland stone, Hamstone and marble;
