MATERIALS: constructed of granite.

DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is an ornately-carved Celtic cross which stands on a tapered stone plinth, with a two-stepped base. TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN SACRED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE / ANCIENT PARISH OF ST AUSTELL / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918

Below the inscription and to the other sides of the plinth are the names of the 200 men who fell.

The inscription on the north face of the upper step reads:

AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS AREA / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF / 1939-1945

The names of the 144 men who fell are inscribed to the sloping face of the extended lower base.

History

The great age of memorial building was in the aftermath of the First World War. It is not known when the war memorial in St Austell, located on Market Street to the north of Holy Trinity Church, was erected and commemorated but it was likely to be during the 1920s.

The names of the men who died in the Second World War were added in 1991 when the north side of the lower step was extended forward with a slanting stone base.

Reasons for Listing

The St Austell war memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: an accomplished and well-realised war memorial which takes the form of an intricately carved Celtic cross;
* Group value: with the Grade I-listed church of the Holy Trinity.
