Lawton Tomb

GV II

Tomb of Edwin Lawton (d.1863).
Gothic Revival headstone. White marble with mastic inlay. Moulded gabled top to stone with stiff-leaf label-stops. Incised ornament comprises an encircled Greek cross to gable, over a star flanked by quatrefoils, over trefoil arcading. The bronze inscription panel at the base records that the 19 year-old¿s `life was pure and his disposition amiable¿.
HISTORY: Lawton lived at St Mary¿s Buildings, Lyncombe. The monument is very unusual because of its technique and embodies the experimentalism of the High Gothic Revival. Located at section II.A.19.20.
