Gatepiers and boundary walls to No.32
GV II
Two pairs of gatepiers with boundary walls. c1840. Ashlar. Slender square piers, opposite main entrance to Oldfield Villa (qv) one pair, and to right higher pair, on bases partly concealed by later paving, with incised panels to front, and to heavy moulded cappings with pyramid carrying rounded terminal blocks, pier extreme right inscribed MOUNT ROSE, adjoining No.32 (qv), clearly built originally as part of No.32. Between and to left of piers good ashlar wall in deep blocks, with coping swept up to piers, and with ashlar courses and coping sloping slightly, following fall in road, wall returns to both sides of site. Important contemporary adjuncts to villa, but lacking original gates.
