868/0/10189 Milestone at Crossroads South of Bodelva
11-NOV-10
GV II
Milestone, dating from the C19, in granite. It is rectangular with a semi-circular head and stands approximately 0.75m high. It is painted white and is inscribed in Sans Serif capitals: LUXULYAN / 3 / MILES; the lettering is picked out in black paint. The upper part of the front face of the stone has an inscribed benchmark.
HISTORY: One of six C19 parish milestones that were erected and maintained by Luxulyan parish; there was never a turnpike trust along these particular roads. It was unusual for a Cornish parish to have its own distinctive milestones.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION:
The milestone at the crossroads to the south of Bodelva is designated at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
* A legible example of a C19 parish milestone, which remains in its original position
* Group value with the other listed milestones to the north and south of Luxulyan
* An unusual example of a milestone that was erected and maintained by the parish
