Statue. Statue 1859 (dated), erected 1861 (inscription). White marble and grey pennant stone. Plinth formed of two eight sided pennant steps with third circular one on top. Statue has circular pennant base with inscription band `WATER IS BEST' at front and `Presented by Bath Temperance Association June 8th 1861' at rear, foliate frieze above. White marble statue of draped classical female figure "Rebecca at the well". Well in form of basin on arcade of four circular piers, rather like church font. Stands on rusticated piers which are on circular base in form of rock outcrop.
HISTORY: This fountain dates from the first wave of public drinking fountain erection, and is contemporary with that in Walcot Street (q.v.). The classical style of the statue was unusual in its day, and clearly alludes to the Roman Baths. The inscription repeats that, in Greek, on the front of the Pump Rooms.
