Footbridge adjoining Top Lock
11/08/72

GV II

Footbridge. c1815. John Rennie, engineer. Manufactured by Stothert of Bath. Coursed limestone rubble pier to the east and ramp to west, cast iron segmental arches with open circles in spandrels diminishing in size toward centre, plain hand rail and vertical railings sweep up from south-west for approx 6m with an extra long/short length over the canal. Cast iron arches are smaller but similar to those of footbridge in Sydney Gardens (qv), which is dated 1800. Inscription plate at the apex of the span reads `STOTHERT BATH'.
HISTORY: This was one of the bridges placed across the new canal to link the recent developments along the slopes of Bathwick Hill with the city. The Kennet and Avon Canal, authorised in 1794, opened fully in 1810.
