Terrace house, now flats. Completed 1790 with C19 alterations. By John Palmer, built by Charles Viner.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, painted to ground floor and basement, rubble and ashlar to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof, Welsh slate to front, built up to full third floor and roof covering not visible to rear, coped gable wall and two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to left. Staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, single-bay three-window front. First floor has three grouped plate glass horned sashes, narrower to left and right, in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill and wrought iron balconette. Second floor has three similar windows without horns in plain reveals with continuous stone sill. Ground floor has to left two/two horned sash in splayed reveal with stone sill, to right six-panel door with beaded, fielded and glazed panels in moulded architrave with flat surround with console brackets supporting moulded cornice, one step to pennant paved crossover. Basement has eight/eight sash in plain reveal with stone sill, six-panel door with three pennant steps under crossover, no area steps. Triple dormer with plate glass sashes. Timber bressumer and stone band course over ground floor, frieze, moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has six/six sash to first floor, other windows plate glass, wrought iron balconettes to ground floor and first floor, one and a half storey ashlar extension to basement.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with cast arrow heads on limestone bases.
HISTORY: Part of incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790; Marlborough Street forms one of the four diagonal approaches to St James's Square.
