Two houses, now public house. Late C18, alterations of 1928 by W.A Williams, architect of Old Bond St.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, roof not visible from street.
PLAN: Part single depth part double depth plan due to wedge shaped site.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and full attic storey, possibly added at time of conversion and remodelling. Ground floor has four arch headed windows and two doors. Platband above, sill band to first floor: between is a late Victorian painted inscription reads 'ALE. THE STAR INN. HOUSE'. Windows to each floor above, tripartite to left and centre, single to right, all plain sashes. Cornice between second and third floors. Coped parapet, ashlar stack on what was originally party wall. Rear elevation not seen.
INTERIOR: A carefully preserved and highly atmospheric pub interior, of a kind now rare ie without the flash of the `Gin Palace'. A tight sequence of small spaces, with extensive boarded panelling. Lounge on left hand side with 1928 panelling. Fielded bar counter, behind-bar fittings, bolection-moulded fireplace surround with relief of a star over hops in main bar, of 1928. Upper floors not inspected: formerly had a clubroom on the first floor.
HISTORY: First shown on Harcourt Masters's map of 1793, a license permitting use of the house as a public house dated 1776 is mounted on the wall. These houses show signs of having been completely refaced at some time, perhaps c1900: the ashlar is of a different character from houses on either side. A copy of the 1928 architect¿s drawing showing use and alterations on display in the bar. The Star is a notable survival as an unpretentious town pub, which retains its original fittings and compartments.
