House, now flats. c1777 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Wood the Younger.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front and right side, now painted, rubble to plinth to basement, rendered to rear. Double pile parapeted mansard roof, hipped to right, Welsh slate to front and rear, with coped party wall to left with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots, small ashlar stack on section of coped wall to front right.
PLAN: House at north end of west range to Catharine Place breaks forward slightly to form pavilion terminating terrace, with single bay range set back slightly to right, entrance front to right side to Rivers Street; staircase to front.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window range with further single window range to right. First floor has two C19 two-light casements to left and centre, horned two/two sashes to right in ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices, lengthened and with early C19 balcony with wrought and cast iron balustrade with timber deck on wrought and cast iron brackets; to first floor right plate glass horned sash in plain reveal with stone sill. Second floor has three plate glass horned sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills, similar sash to right in plain reveal with stone sill. Ground floor has four plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. Basement has three plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, C20 glazed door, opening to sub-basement under centre window with wrought iron guard; pennant area steps with wrought iron handrail. One double dormer with plate glass sashes. Band course over ground floor to main range with incised street name CATHARINE PLACE; modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet; moulded cornice over ground floor to single window range to right, upper moulding of modillion cornice and coped parapet of main range continued. Entrance front to right side has three blind windows to each of first and second floors, small C20 window in plain reveal with stone sill to second floor; ground floor has two blind windows with stone sills, similar plate glass horned sash; six-panel door to centre left has flush and fielded panels and single pane overlight in pedimented Doric doorcase. Shallow plinth; moulded cornice over ground floor; sill bands to first and second floors; small moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation has four two/two sashes to each of first and second floors, to first floor with simple wrought iron balconettes, three similar windows to ground floor; pair C20 doors; two six/six sashes, C20 window and door to basement; double dormer with plate glass horned sashes.
INTERIOR: Inspected by Bath Council 1974. Rear ground floor flat has a very ornate frieze and cornice, but unsympathetically restored.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with lifting section and gate on limestone bases.
