Large end terrace house. c1800-1804, possibly by Charles Harcourt Masters.
MATERIALS: Rendered front, coursed and squared rear limestone, slate roof behind parapet.
PLAN: Compact square block with low link, left, to No. 2 (qv).
EXTERIOR: Three storeys. Principal north facing front three windowed, twelve-pane over two-light casements with light cast iron balcony railings and deep sill band, ground floor also has two-light casements. Thin frieze, cornice, blocking course and parapet. Each end has two ashlar stacks. Entrance in west end, from Wellsway, has veranda with lean-to canopy on slender trellis supports at first floor, and central pair of glazed doors with margin pane transom light. Rear has two wide spaced twelve-pane sashes at second floor, mid-height staircase sash, and wide gabled conservatory with felt roof, and early twelve-pane sashes to wood mullions. To right, link with pitched roof under pantiles, below these returned boundary wall including, right, panelled door in reveals, with slab hood on brackets, and wide garage door.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Wellsway end high boundary wall with coping, swept down to pair of panelled piers with heavy pyramidal cappings and anthemion finials, opposite doorway, approached by two+two stone steps. Wall returns to Devonshire Buildings, with pair of ashlar gatepiers, and lower wall returned to front of building at party boundary. Part of very long speculative row, with many variations, but retaining substantial original detail, especially on north elevations.
