of the Holy Trinity
GV II
Piers, railings and gates. 1834, probably by HE Goodridge, architect to original church.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, cast iron.
EXTERIOR: Long run of plain spiked iron railings with top and bottom rail in eight panels between each pair of piers on curb wall with heavy weathered coping, ten bays, plus two pairs of gates and single gate, also single bay return to further pier at left hand end, adjoining Vicarage site (qv). Large square piers, fifteen in all, have splayed corners, chamfered bases, and steep gabled cappings with roll-mould, and three rolls to weatherings. To left of chancel, and right, beyond west end of church, are larger pairs of these piers to elaborate cast and wrought iron gates with scroll bottom rails, dog-bars, and rich scrolled heads, under simple overthrow, and in `standard' pair of piers smaller single gate opposite north porch. Short return run to left has railing set on retaining wall approx 2m high, and terminates in pier. Total extent of railings and piers approx 95m. Important historical and visual adjunct to church.
