Raised pavement fronting Nos 1-10 Portland place (qv). 1786. By John Eveleigh .
MATERIALS: Limestone rubble and pennant stone.
Pavement highest at eastern end to right where enclosed for approx 10m by railings with cast iron balls below bottom rail, to left long row of six steps. Ramps approaching central platform also have railings flanked by slightly truncated obelisks on plinths, formerly with lamps to tops.
HISTORY: An elegant, slightly Neoclassical, version of Bath¿s raised pavements, adding further to the monumentality of Portland Place.
