GV II*
House. c1740, with C19 shop window. Possibly by John Wood the Elder.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, rendered and painted on ground floor, roof not visible from street, or at rear.
PLAN: Narrow frontage double depth plan.
STYLE: Palladian style.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, cellar, and presumably attic but roof not visible; three windows. Ground floor has doorway to left with Doric order and pediment, six-panel door, small paned shop window, nine x four, plat band at first floor level. All windows above are six/six-sashes of late C18 type, those on first floor with keyed heads. Cornice, parapet, stacks with pots. Full height segmental bay on rear elevation, band at each floor level, triple six/six-sash separated by stone mullions, top floor has smaller window flanked by half sized ones.
INTERIOR: Not inspected, but said to be very fine, with coved ceilings.
HISTORY: This house may predate general development of John Wood the Elder's Parades scheme. Narrow site and lack of uniformity suggests an earlier plot, but this does not preclude Wood as designer.
SOURCES: Mowl T and Earnshaw B: John Wood Architect of Obsession: Bath: 1988-: 135-147.
