GV II

Symmetrical pair of semi-detached houses. c1827. Probably by John Pinch.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, hipped slate roof with moulded stacks to party wall and sides.
PLAN: Double depth plans with single-depth ranges to each side.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and basement; each house is two window range. A coped parapet, cornice, frieze and ground floor platband encircle the building and the ground floor of the central block has banded rustication. Each house has six/six pane sash windows to the second floor; a two storey segmental bay to the main central block with a cornice and frieze; paired Tuscan pilasters flank full height tripartite sash windows, that to the first floor with a trellised balconette. A prostyle porch in the angle of the set back range is supported by Ionic pillars in antis with a balustraded parapet fronting a six/six pane sash window. The wide doors have two vertical panels. The bay of No. 39 to the right has a balustraded parapet with ornamented piers over the pilasters and four/four pane tripartite sash windows. No. 40 to the left has a low three storey left wing with a coped parapet and no cornice. The bay has a plain coped parapet and plate glass to the tripartite windows.
INTERIORS: Not inspected, but that to No. 39 recorded by Bath Preservation Trust. This reports an inner hall with segmental fanlight; cantilevered stone staircase with mahogany handrail; much original plasterwork of high quality; reeded door architraves. Many of the chimneypieces have been replaced.
