NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENTAL WAR MEM
ORIAL
II
War memorial unveiled in 1922 and dedicated to the Prince of Wales's North Staffordshire Regiment. The Portland stone war memorial includes a square triple-stepped plinth, with pedestal surmounted by a square, slightly tapering Doric column upon which stands a bronze Chinese dragon. The NE facing pedestal base bears an inscription providing information on the unveiling ceremony and records that the names of the fallen are held in a book in the nearby Garrison Church. Above this inscription attached to the pedestal dado is the regimental insignia consisting of the Prince of Wales feathers above a twisted length of rope. The NW facing pedestal dado bears a sunken oval panel containing a carved dragon and banner inscribed CHINA above a list of 13 campaigns ranging in date from Guadaloupe in 1759 to Afghanistan in 1919. The SW facing pedestal dado has a large sunken rectangular panel with the inscription "THE PRINCE OF WALES'S NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT IN MEMORY OF OUR FALLEN COMRADES 1914-1918 AND 1939-1945". The SE pedestal dado is inscribed with the names of over 50 battles and areas of conflict with which the regiment was involved and a sunken circular panel containing the Prince of Wales feathers. Details of World War II campaigns are inscribed on the base.
History: The war memorial for the North Staffordshire Regiment was unveiled on 30th September 1922 by the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire- Right Hon. The Earl of Dartmouth- supported by Major General Sir Arthur Hoskins and dedicated by the Bishop of Lichfield.
