Walled garden enclosure. 1770-72. Perhaps Lancelot "Capability" Brown. Red brick laid in English garden wall bond with stone copings. Octagonal enclosure with circular central dipping pool [now dry] and rectangular slip gardens to three sides. The walls vary in height between c.12 feet and c.20 feet and have stone copings. The enclosure is roughly octagonal with longer walls to the diagonal sides to allow maximum exposure to the sun. The northern faces of the north-east and north-west walls have heating flues in the walls and to the northern apex is a portion of higher wall against the south side of which was built a lean-to glass house. There is an arched pedestrian entrance to the south-east side and a cart entrance at the north west. Against the North-west wall are set two 2-storey cottages. That to the south end faces inwards to the garden and has a gabled ground floor porch flanked by 3-light casements at ground and first floor levels with hood moulds. The cottage to the left of this is later and faces out from the garden with cambered heads to the casements and random fenestration. The large enclosed garden, which stands within a registered landscape, has an interesting and unusual plan form, designed to make the best use of the heat of the sun. There is a possible connection with Lancelot Brown and the walls, which are very largely complete, form a group with the stable court
