Milestone of 1761 and early-C19 milepost. The rectangular milestone is of sandstone with an arched top and the attached post is of triangular section with a domed top. The face of the stone is masked and no lettering is apparent. The post has raised lettering which reads 'TILLINGTON' to the top and the angled plate below reads, to left 'STONE/5/MILES' and to right 'STAFFORD/2/MILES'.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Milestones are of national importance as they are some of the few physical remains of national and local historic road use. The mileposts on this route reflect the standardisation of roads to facilitate the transport needs of the increasingly industrial landscape of C18 Staffordshire. This is an unusual example of an earlier C18 milestone which is combined with an early C19 cast iron milepost.
