Milestone, 1896, cast iron. Triangular, downward sloping top and hollow back. Cast lettering reads 'CHESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL 1896' (top); 'STRETTON 1 1/2 MILES, GREAT BUDWORTH 6 MILES, NORTHWICH 9' (left); 'STOCKTON HEATH 3/4 MILE, WARRINGTON 2' (right). Maker's mark at bottom of left face reads 'W H SMITH & CO. MAKERS, WHETCHURCH'.
HISTORY: Milestone erected in 1896 on the east side of the A49 in Appleton, formerly an C18 turnpike.
