WAR MEMORIAL IN THE CHURCHYARD OF CHUR
CH OF ST LAWRENCE
II
War memorial in form of a granite Celtic cross. Date uncertain
DESCRIPTION: The memorial is located approximately 10m north-east of the East end of the church of St Lawrence and consists of a simple granite Celtic Cross on a tall, tapering, square-sectioned shaft. The shaft, which is differentiated from the head of the cross by a narrow moulded band, stands on a square-sectioned tapered plinth which is supported by a square-sectioned low base. The north-east face of the plinth is inscribed with lead lettering with the following inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN PERPETUAL MEMORY / OF THESE BRAVE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / FOR KING AND COUNTRY, RIGHT AND LIBERTY / 1914-1918 / (Names of the fallen) / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.
There does not appear to be any commemoration of subsequent wars.
HISTORY: It is not currently known exactly when this memorial was erected but presumably some time during the inter-war period as there is no reference to the fallen of World War II.
