Milestone. C18. Limestone. Roughly square section with slightly domed top. Face inscribed 'London' but below that the inscription of the distance to London has been eroded.

HISTORY This is one in a series of 5 milestones erected beween Margaretting and Great Baddow by the Essex Turnpike Trust to mark the distances to London.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE

Milestones survive in large numbers as important indicators of road use and to merit listing they must survive in their original position and be largely intact. This is a good example of a milestone erected in the C18. It appears to be in its original position and part of its inscription is still clearly legible.
