War memorial in the churchyard of Holy
Cross church
GV II
War memorial. Carved in marble, it consists of a decorated circular Celtic wheel cross on a tapering plinth and two steps. It is set in a small elevated flower bed. The face of the plinth facing Main Street is inscribed with "TO THE GLORY/AND TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN/OF SCOPWICK WHO FELL IN THE/GREAT WAR 1914-1918/THEIR NAMES LIVETH EVERMORE" and the step below with "1939-1945/ROBERT P. BAUMBER"
History: It is not known exactly when this memorial was erected. It was originally dedicated to those men of the parish who died in the First World War and was then subsequently also dedicated to a single service man who died in the Second World War.
Summary of Importance: War memorials have a very strong historical and cultural significance on both a local and national scale. This is a good example of a war memorial dedicated initially to the dead of the First World War and subsequently also dedicated to the dead of the Second World War. It also has group value with the Church of the Holy Cross.
