GV II
Memorial statue to Elaine, Lady Falkiner (d.1900). Carrara marble. Mason unknown. The near-life size, barefooted figure is dressed in a Grecian dress, with appropriately dressed hair.
HISTORY: This is an unusually vivid portrait for a memorial sculpture, and it ably captures Lady Falkiner's elegance. A South African by birth, Lady Falkiner died from illness contracted while running a military hospital during the Boer War. Listed for its sculptural quality and human interest.
