WEST MONKTON
HESTERCOMBE
The Temple north north east of Hestercombe House

GV
II*

Temple in landscape garden. Late C18, probably by Coplestone Warre Bampfylde; restored late C20. Ashlar tetrastyle prostyle; Tuscan columns and large modillioned pediment. Brick walls at rear.
The Temple is one of the garden follies at Hestercombe in the Picturesque landscape laid out by Bampefylde from circa 1750 to 1790. It is situated on the east ridge of the landscaped combe, which has a series of linking ponds, cascades, rills and sluices. This garden at Hestercombe is a most important example of the Picturesque. Bampfylde was an adviser and close friend of Henry Hoare, whose garden at Stourhead is almost contemporaneous.
