Dining Hall, Common Rooms and Colonnade. 1906 by CJ Blomfield.
MATERIALS: Red brick in English bond, stone dressings. Slate
roof, steeply pitched and hipped in centre, coped gables at
ends.
PLAN: Large central rectangular plan with cross gabled wing at
each end. Colonnade runs along south front and continues west
to join with main block (qv).
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics. Mostly sash windows with
glazing bars. Several tall chimneys with corniced heads.
Symmetrical south front (facing courtyard). Centre section of
7-bays. Brick pilasters to stone blocking course and cornice.
Over middle 3-bays is large semi-circular carved stone
pediment in 3 sections with coat of arms in centre, flanked by
figures. Windows at first floor level are tall with one
mullion and 2 transoms, and have moulded stone segmental
heads. Windows light Dining Hall. Roof has 2 small lucarnes
widely spaced and surmounted by octagonal bell turret with
slim columns and festoons on base. End gables each have 2
windows on first floor with stone pedimented niche in centre.
At corners are pilasters with alternating stone quoins and
modillioned capital with linking deep stone band. Attic level
has large 4-light Diocletian window. On right end of right
hand gable blank section of wall with similar quoins on
corner. Colonnade has 29-bays, of stone, with Tuscan columns,
moulded cornice with balustraded parapet. Bays 6, 18, and 24
have double columns with pilaster between surmounted by
semicircular pediment. Bay 12 has pedimented gateway with
semi-circular head and large key stone.
INTERIOR: large Dining Hall, with coffered barrel ceiling with
circular garlands down each side above dentilled and moulded
cornice. East end has panelled gallery. Walls are panelled on
all sides to window sill height.
Dining hall, Common Rooms and Colonnade form north side of
large court. The west side is enclosed by Wellington College
Main Block (qv) the east side by the Dormitory Block (qv) and
the south side by the Chapel, Porch and Colonnade (qv).
