Pergola & court in garden at Moor
Close, incl. enclosing walls &
balustrades

Part of larger garden at Moor Close (qv). Court with enclosing
walls, balustrades and pergola. 1911 by Oliver Hill. Red
brick, York stone, clay tile slips and pebbles. 3-bay pergola
with moulded brick piers on bases with projecting brick bands.
Large diagonal patterned trellis work between piers with
centre bay left open. Very large oak lintels over piers. Low
retaining wall faces upper terrace (qv) with weathered plinth,
stone coping with semicircular balustrading; central opening
to court. Court formed by retaining wall on the south-east
side. On north-west side is brick screen wall in English bond
with tile coping; on left hand is moulded brick opening at end
of pergola. In centre section of wall is similar opening with
wrought-iron door flanked by 2 circular openings with moulded
brick surrounds and keystones. Both moulded brick openings
lead to the forecourt (qv). 1911 by Oliver Hill. Red brick and
York stone. Flight of 5 and 4 rectangular stone steps flanked
at the lower level by 2 panelled brick piers with moulded
stone bases and caps. To the left, a brick retaining wall in
English bond with weathered top, links the left-hand pier to
the pergola court.
