Shop and offices. c1890s with later alterations.
Reddish-orange brick in Flemish bond with ashlar first floor
and dressings, concealed roof and brick end stacks with ashlar
cornices and pots. First floor: outer wide pilasters and Ionic
columns in antis with 4 lower bands, 2 Ionic columns to either
side of centre window a single light with transom. Otherwise
two 3-light mullion and transom windows with segmental heads,
in moulded surrounds and with sills. Continuous cornice over
first floor. Second floor: continuous sill band, moulded below
windows. Row of seven 1/1 horned sashes in moulded reveals
with stepped keystones and two lower bands and upper quoins.
Continuous egg and dart frieze and modillion cornice with
outer cartouches between. Upper stage: continuous sill band,
moulded under windows. Outer single light with transom,
central 3-light mullion and transom window; all have moulded
surrounds, quoins and keystones. Segmental-arched upshots to
outer, taller flattened pediment to centre, all with
embellished finials; side scrolls to outer upshots. Ground
floor: shop front has timber pilasters, moulded brackets with
strapwork, continuous egg and dart frieze and moulded cornice.
Otherwise renewed shop front in period style with glazed
windows and central double doors.
INTERIOR: dog-leg staircase with cast-iron stick balusters.
5-panel doors. Scrolled bracket as support to upper landing.
To first floor are two timber mantlepieces. 2 cast-iron
fireplaces in attic.
Nos 11-15 (consecutive) The Foregate comprise a fine late
Victorian commercial group in a spirited Northern Renaissance
style.
