roof with parapet, stack to left front roof slope with
oversailing detail. Timber shop front. Narrow burgage plot with
principal axis at right-angles to street. 3 storeys and basement.
3 first-floor windows. Stone detailing includes sills and capped
keystones to window heads. 6/6 near-flush-frame sashes all under
flat gauged brick arches. Late C19 shopfront with late C20
repairs and alterations, slender fluted pilasters, fascia with
console brackets and cornice, central panelled pillar with
recessed entrance behind, shallow panelled stall riser, slender
turned mullions with moulded plinths and capitals, 2-panel door
to shop, shallow raised and fielded with glazed panel above,
overlight. 6-panel door to left with overlight gives access to
upper floors.
New roof structure c1988.
HISTORIC NOTE: A photograph forming part of a 1911 advert for
'Sigley's China Store' at 96 High Street (qv) shows the same
basic form of shopfront but without the central panelled pillar.
This suggests the latter may have been introduced for structural
reasons.
