Includes: Maud Foster Drain, walls, steps and railings
HORNCASTLE ROAD.
Drainage channel walls, steps and railing. Circa 1810.
Originally by John Rennie, altered C20. Red brick, ashlar
gritstone, oak. Brick retaining walls, renewed C20, gritstone
ashlar coping blocks.
The walls rake down to the water level and terminate at
Bargate Bridge to the south and curve round to stop ends at
the north. On both sides of the drain, towards Bargate Bridge
end are pairs of pedestrian steps set within the thickness of
the wall, leading to a small stone platform at the base.
On the west side, beside Bargate Bridge, are wider steps with
curved side walls in original brickwork, with ashlar quoins.
The retaining walls apart from one higher section on the west
side, terminate at road level and have early C20 oak posts and
rail balustrades.
