The Towers
II
House. 1890. Built by William Pritchard. Rock-faced red
sandstone with ashlar dressings; slate roof with stone
copings, red tile cresting and gable end stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey, 4-bay front; left of centre bay has
cross-gabled attic, right of centre bay 3 storeys. At right of
centre, flight of steps leads to projecting porch with angle
buttresses, corner tourelle surmounted by heraldic lions,
3-light window to front and half-glazed 4-panel door to right
return. Above is a canted oriel window with a single light to
each face at first floor level: second storey rises above roof
level as a quasi tower with 1-light windows and crow-stepped
crenellated parapet.
At left of centre is a single-storey canted bay window on
ground floor with 3-light mullioned window; similar window on
first floor is transomed; attic window is of 2 lights. At left
end is a 2-storey flat-roofed square bay window with dentilled
eaves cornice and 5-light mullioned windows with leaded
glazing on both floors. Right end bay has a single-storey
square bay based on paired cross windows. On first floor is a
4-light mullioned and transomed window. There is an eaves
corbel table over the third and fourth bays and the single
storey windows have weathered copings with shallow
crenellations.
INTERIOR: panelled entrance hall. Panelled ceiling in right
end room; dentilled cornices in Hall and Drawing Rooms. Stone
mantel in Drawing Room, 5-panel doors, staircase with twin
twist newels, bullnosed step, dado and spandrel panelling.
