Terrace of 5 houses (Nos 31, 35 and 37 now flats) and attached
area railings and boundary railings to left. 1827-31. By John
Forbes, architect. Stucco over brick with concealed roof and
party-wall stacks; wrought- and iron railings, balconies and
porch.
PLAN: right side hallways and with full-height service ranges
to rear.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 15 first-floor windows (3
windows each). Centre and end houses break forwards. Stucco
detailing includes: to central breakforward are Doric
pilasters to ends and 3/4 engaged Ionic columns between
windows; second-floor band. 6/6 sashes where original, taller
to first floor, all in plain reveals and with sills, those to
ground floor, breakforwards are in shallow,
elliptically-arched recesses. Entrances to right (also in
elliptically-arched recesses): flight of roll-edged steps to
4- and 6-fielded-panel doors (upper panels raised and fielded,
lower panels flush, No.33 part glazed) with overlights (the
outer ones are elliptically arched) with batwing and circle
type glazing bars where original (Nos 29, 31 and 35), some
have sidelights.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: arrowhead area railings with urn finials
to stanchions, and to sides of steps. Similar arrowhead
railings with bars and dogbars and urn finials to left
boundary. Continuous first-floor balconies have double lozenge
motif. Scrolled boot scrapers. No.29 has porch to rear with
scrolled uprights and openwork frieze. Blind boxes to some
windows.
HISTORICAL NOTE: sites sold to a consortium of 5 men and
houses begun 18.05.1827, to be completed 'according to a plan
on the back of this document' (illus. Blake p33) by
24.06.1829, ready for occupation by 1831. Originally known as
The Central Carriage Drive, the name Pittville Lawn was first
given to the terraces now forming Nos 29-37 (odd), 45-53 (odd)
(qv) and 59-67 (odd) (qv), which all have a similar design.
Built as part of the development of this area undertaken for
Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by
the architect John Forbes.
All the listed buildings along Pittville Lawn form a
distinguished architectural group.
