Pair of houses, now house (left) and flats (right). c1824-8.
Architect probably John Forbes. Stucco over brick with
concealed roofs, stucco party-wall stacks and iron balcony and
window boxes.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 5 first-floor windows, with
full-height, single-window bay set back to right. End
breakforwards to main range. Stucco details include: blind
'window' to centre (shared between houses), that to first
floor with reeded frieze and cornice on console brackets;
second-floor sill band, crowning frieze and cornice with
blocking course. 8/8 sashes where original, in plain reveals
and with sills. Main range has end entrances, steps to 4-panel
doors (that to right C20, that to left part-glazed) in
recesses, that to left between pilasters. To right an outshut
to front at ground floor with C20 door. Basements have C20
windows.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: individual window balconies to ground and
first floors at right has alternate rod and waving rod
balusters. Window guards to first floor at left have scroll
motifs.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the street was originally known as
Montpellier Retreat. Forbes was architect and surveyor to the
Pittville Estate c1824-5.
